Documents and Sites
W3O--World-Wide Web Organization Committee This organization, under the leadership of Tim Berners-Lee, the author of WWW, was formed to document and encourage the development of a common set of tools and base programs for continued WWW development. W30 is the closest thing to the "owner" of the Web.
WWW FAQ The World-Wide Web Frequently Asked Questions list, maintained by Thomas Boutell, is thorough, making it an excellent place to start. Written in HTML format, it provides links to the resources it lists. Among other things it lists current clients and servers available, guidelines for publishing, and lists of WWW sites available for leasing.
The International WWW Conference Series or try the site in Germany The First International WWW Conference was held in Geneva in May 1994 with 380 participants. The second was held five months later in Chicago and had 1,300 participants with perhaps 1,000 more who could not get in. These conferences are documented online. They are an excellent resource with links to tutorials, trip reports, and announcements, as well as the proceedings.
GVU's WWW User Surveys The Georgia Institute of Technology has started doing six-month surveys of Web users and providers. The report includes demographics.
Best of the Web Contest Starting in 1994, the Best of the Web contest has such categories as best document design, best navigational aid, best commercial service, best educational service, and most technical merit. Check out the winners and emulate them.
1995 National (U.S.) Information Infrastructure Awards Awards given annually in six categories: arts and entertainment, business, community, education, government, and health.
NCSA NCSA Mosaic brought WWW to the world. Check here for its server and client software, exemplary sites, and list of what's new on the Web.
CERN This is where WWW was invented by Berners-Lee. It continues to be a repository of programs, archives, and directories of Web sites.
SGML Web Site This site links to other FAQs and a wealth of information about SGML.
Web Developer's Virtual Library This is a useful collection of links for Web developers and providers.
HaLSoft HTML Validation Service This essential and free online service is provided by HaL Software Systems, of Austin, Texas. It allows you to check your HTML code against different levels of the HTML standard, including the Netscape extensions. It also allows you to do a quick online check of pieces of HTML code.
Handbook: Running a WWW Server by Brian Kelly of the Computing Service, University of Leeds or U.S. mirror site This handbook was written to provide support for British academic institutions that want to run a World-Wide Web service. It is an alternative to the many U.S.-centered advisory documents available online.
Web Tools Review by Philip Greenspun This is an online journal for developers of WWW sites by the author of the award-winning "Travels with Samantha" WWW site.
Web Developer's Journal The Web Developer's Journal is a part of NCT Web Magazine--a computer magazine aimed at small business and home office users.
WebWeek This free, controlled-subscription weekly is Mecklermedia's newspaper for Web developers. It is available both online and in print.
